Herbal Medicine
Herbal medicine — the therapeutic use of plants — is humanity’s original form of healing. Long before modern pharmaceuticals, people relied on nature’s pharmacy for nourishment and recovery. Today, scientific research confirms what traditional healers have long known: plants contain powerful compounds that support health and wellbeing.
At its core, herbal medicine embraces a holistic philosophy. Health is seen not just as the absence of disease, but as a state of balance between body, mind, and spirit. Rather than simply treating symptoms, herbal medicine seeks to uncover and address the root cause of imbalance, working in harmony with the body’s innate ability to heal.
Gentle, adaptable, and suitable for all ages, herbal medicine can support everyone — from infants to the elderly. To see the list of conditions herbalists commonly support, visit: https://nimh.org.uk/_resources/seeing-a-herbalist/what-does-a-herbalist-treat/
Herbal medicine reminds us that true healing is a partnership between humanity and nature — an invitation to reconnect with the natural world and the wisdom within ourselves.
Who are Medical Herbalists?
Medical herbalists are highly trained practitioners who use the therapeutic properties of plants to support health and wellbeing. Taking a holistic approach, we consider the whole person — body, mind, and lifestyle — to address the root causes of imbalance.
In the UK, medical herbalists complete rigorous training to BSc degree level or eqivalent, typically lasting 4 to 6 years. The studies cover anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, materia medica, biochemistry, and nutrition among others, and include over 500 hours of supervised clinical practice. Medical herbalists are trained in diagnostic skills too.
Patient safety and wellbeing are always our top priorities. We are trained to recognise red flags, refer to other healthcare providers when needed, and work safely alongside conventional medicine.
Each consultation is personalised, resulting in a tailored treatment plan that may include herbal tinctures, decoctions, capsules, teas, syrups, creams, etc as well as lifestyle and nutrition advice — all carefully designed to support your individual needs.
As members of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH), we adhere to strict professional and ethical standards and commit to ongoing professional development, ensuring the highest quality of care in every aspect of our practice.

I am a medical herbalist (also marine mammal scientist, but that is another story) whose practice is deeply rooted in science, tradition, and spirituality. With a lifelong connection to nature, my view is that the body possesses an innate ability to heal and that nature provides everything needed to support that process. Drawing on both ancient herbal wisdom and modern scientific knowledge, I work with each person individually, creating tailored herbal remedies, nutrition and lifestyle guidance.
I believe in these key principles of naturopathic healing:
The healing power of nature
Identify the root cause
Do no harm
Treat the whole person
Practitioner as teacher
Prevention is better than cure
I see clients in clinics in Lowestoft, Suffolk and St Olaves, Norfolk.
Maja Nimak-Wood
Consultant Medical Herbalist, MNIMH
My mission is to facilitate a meaningful connection between people and the natural world through the transformative power of herbal medicine. I believe that when we engage with plants—through learning, healing, and shared experience—we rekindle a sense of belonging to the Earth and to ourselves. Herbal medicine offers more than physical healing; it nurtures emotional and spiritual wellbeing, reminding us that true health grows out of our relationships with nature, with each other, and within ourselves.

My Mission
Why Mare Verde?
Mare Verde translates to “Green Sea,” a name that reflects both the essence of my work and the core of who I am. I am a marine mammal scientist with a deep love for the oceans and their creatures, but I also feel a profound connection to the green world of plants, forests, and rivers. It was important for me to honour both realms in my work, because I believe in their unity—where blue and green together represent the wholeness and harmony of nature. Hence, alongside herbs, I incorporate elements of marine therapy in my work with clients.
